Vision Engineering: transforming microscopy through innovation

Committed to ergonomic innovation, Vision Engineering is redefining how the world sees, inspects, and measures. As a global leader in ergonomic microscopy, digital 3D visualization, and metrology solutions, Vision helps customers across industries enhance quality, efficiency, and productivity.

Founded in the UK in 1958, Vision exports over 90 percent of its products worldwide. Its pioneering portfolio includes eyepiece-less stereo microscopes, digital 3D inspection systems, and precision metrology instruments, all designed to improve operator comfort and performance. a large, brightly lit workshop with multiple workstations

“Vision was established by Rob Freeman, who began his career as a racing engineer for Jaguar,” explains Paul Newbatt, Sales and Marketing Director. “He realized that inspecting internal engine components without full disassembly was nearly impossible, so he developed a borescope that allowed internal inspection. This innovation laid the foundation for Vision Engineering.”

Originally an optical subcontractor to major British manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce, Ferranti, and GEC, Vision has grown into a global organization with offices in the UK, North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. Its Woking headquarters, opened in 2017, houses design, manufacturing, machining, painting, and assembly facilities, ensuring complete control over production quality.

At the heart of Vision’s philosophy is ergonomic design. Traditional binocular microscopes force users to align their eyes with fixed eyepieces, often leading to fatigue and discomfort during long inspection sessions. Vision’s patented eyepiece-less optical technology replaces this with a more natural viewing experience – eliminating the need for strict eye alignment, reducing exposure to intense light, and improving hand-eye coordination. The result: operators work with greater accuracy, more comfortably, for longer.

“We’re proud to be ground-breaking designers of ergonomic inspection and measurement systems,” says Paul. “Our products serve industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace, electronics, defense, and medical devices, as well as laboratory environments for applications such as stem cell research and IVF. Wherever precision inspection or dimensional verification is needed, we provide the tools to make it easier and more comfortable.”

Innovation remains the driving force behind Vision’s success. The company’s latest breakthrough, ProteQ VISO, is a digital 3D stereo microscope that brings the benefits of stereo vision to a digital platform. “We believe we’re the first to design and manufacture a 3D microscopy system that provides a true three-dimensional perspective in this form,” Paul explains. “With pupil tracking, compact design, and high-resolution imaging, ProteQ VISO is ideal for production lines, laboratories, and inspection stations.”

Unlike conventional 2D systems, the 3D platform delivers a more intuitive view of components and supports live 3D streaming, allowing teams across the globe to collaborate and make rapid, informed decisions. From inspecting circuit boards to examining biological samples or prototype components, ProteQ VISO enhances clarity, precision, communication and collaboration across sites.

As a UK-based contract manufacturer, VETP supports projects from prototype to production, helping reduce cost and lead times while maintaining the highest standards of quality and regulatory compliance. Every project is built on partnership, trust and attention to detail, ensuring reliable results and consistent performance.

To further expand its manufacturing capabilities, Vision recently acquired a business in the East Midlands, adding anodizing, milling, turning, and contract machining to its service portfolio. The company is investing heavily in new infrastructure to modernize operations and support both internal production and third-party manufacturing.

From its humble origins to its current status as a world leader in ergonomic microscopy and metrology, Vision Engineering continues to exemplify British innovation, craftsmanship, and technological excellence.

Looking ahead, Paul is confident about the company’s trajectory: “We’ve diversified our product range and strengthened our global partnerships. Over the next five years, we’ll continue investing in innovation and expanding our capabilities. Our engineering and design teams are world-class, and we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in microscopy and measurement.”
